For those who haven’t heard, Project Natal is Microsoft’s new controller-free gaming experience. Remember the days when you’d run around pointing your fingers at the bad guys and going, “bang, bang!?” This may be it. Except, now, when your finger goes off, dudes on the screen explode. Finally, freedom from the confines of a controller. No more button mashing. That may be mocking a little, but it is a pretty stellar concept. So, imagine playing Bungie’s new addition to the Halo series, Halo:

4 Stars A “rinse-wash-repeat” very fun action adventure game
While there’s not much story to P.S.O. the game is oddly addicting. The gameplay is where it’s at, and where it hurts. For that’s really all you do… go around killing monsters. The main heart of the game, is gaining experience and levels and finding good or rare items. Now there is more depth to it than that. It all depends on the ID color of your character what type of items you find. Certain very rare items can be combined, or not be used until you’re a certain level. Your mag (robotic-like familiar) is one key to help you move along a bit faster by upping IT’s stats which help your own. Then there are ways your mag can change depending on what you feed it,and even a hidden 4th level evolution for everyone. So just touching on these few aspects, there’s more depth here to be had, but you have to be VERY patient in finding what you want. The Xbox has the best character amount of options With each gamertag you can have 12 characters each. AND you can use the same gamertag in each of the 4 slots available which can total 48 characters on your hard drive!

Now the down side and a little history why Live is required.

A Live account (good or expired) is needed just to play the game. Now the front cover of the US version has this highlighted on every NEW game cover in orange to let you know BEFORE you buy it! Now Live was introduced in the US before it was released in Japan, but PSO was released in Japan FIRST the SAME DAY Live was released to the Japanese Xbox, as a bonus, every Japanese Live subscriber received PSO free with their Live account! So it was no-brainer that you just bought Live… you CAN play PSO on your Xbox now– for Japan that is. The US version was delayed about 2 or 3 times before it was released early Spring/late Winter of 2003.

Now an explanation for the online cost incase you didn’t know. PSO for the DC was free, and the hackers came out in force online… and it was bad. PSO ver 2.0 came out with a cost around $5 (it actually matched the yen to dollar amount which normally came around to just over $5 instead of the $7 that was advertised as the online price). Having a cost helped…. some, but the hackers eventually came out again in force. PSO 1 & 2 for the Xbox the cheating is still there, but can be MUCH easier avoided. Simply put, make sure you know who your friends are online are people you can trust, and you’re fine really.

I rated this game a 5 since I’ve been playing it for nearly 6 years across 2 consoles and 3 versions. But rating it overall as a 4 for the repetitive nature of the game and the Live requirement for X-Box. As cheap as this game is now, with a live Live account or expired Live account, buying PSO at this price is a no-brainer and will have you playing… for HUNDREDS of hours.

I’ve been addicted since it came out on the DC version 1.0 (1999) and STILL addicted on the X-Box!

3 Stars Great game, terrible platform
Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast is tied with the Sims for Mac as my favorite video game of all time. It’s just gorgeous. The graphics, the sound, the adventure, the intellectual stimulation of mags and weapons, the feeling that I really am on another planet–I can play for many, many hours and not get tired of it.

Unfortunately, I can’t play PSO for Xbox, because I don’t have a high speed Internet connection and I wouldn’t be able to afford xBox live even if I did. It is a stupid, stupid, stupid thing that I can’t even play the *offline* version without an xBox Live account.

4 Stars kyle “hope to be talazar on pso”
ive never played this game but hear me out ive read alot of reviews and heard from a bunch of my friends and the only bad part is the hunting lincence and must have xbox live but the rest is awesome and this guy name dexter rocks i hope i play it soon and i mite meet dexter

ps:this is a 3 player co-op and a must get a.s.a.p

3 Stars I am soooo angry
I love this game. I played it on dreamcast and gamecube, and although you CAN go online with those, you don’t have to, and you surely didn’t have to pay if you just wanted to play offline. I bought this at a gamestop because I loved the earlier versions, I put it in my xbox, and all of a sudden, I realize that I couldn’t play it. I’m really mad. However, if you don’t mind paying more every month, go for it, it’s an amazing game.

5 Stars You need this game, honestly.
Before I purchased this game less then a month ago I took the time to read all of these reviews. The ones ranting about how awesome and exciting this game is, are right. Gameplay is fun and exciting and with all the wheeling and dealing I do to get rare items trading online I feel like a used car salesmen. Like I said Ive only had this game a month, and Im level 117. Thats how addicting this game is! if your dedicated gaining levels and getting stronger is easy, I promise. Once you are happy with your level, explore the Battle and Challenge modes. I just earned my first challenge rank yesterday, woo! This game is worth everything you must pay or do to get it. And by the way you dont have to PAY to play offline, you simply must have xbox live. The first 2 online months are free anyway, give it a try! Once your online feel free to look me up, my legitness will guide you on your way through the PSO world. BUY THIS GAME!!!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars The Truth Of It
Originally entitled “Espionage,” Psi Ops is an unique new take on action gaming. The use of psi abilites makes the gamepley very interesting from the start.Being able to grab an enemy who is 50 feet away from you and slam him into a wall, light him on fire, control his mind, or make his brain explode “will” leave you satisfied. While the psi abilities are the main attraction of the game, there are also some exciting weapons and some really tough AI to be found in the game. With an astounding action filled line-up that includes: great AI,weapons, abilities and music, along with a great story and rock solid action, Psi Ops is more than your average weekend action romp, it is a truly unique and exciting gaming experience. I hope that this review has been helpful to you and that you enjoy this wonderful game. I thank you for your time.

5 Stars Awesome!!!!!!
This game is awesome! This game integrates shooting and stealth better than most other shooters out there. The graphics are great and the sound-effects are mind-blowing(pun-intended) It is also really cheap to buy. Unfortunatly, this game uses a lot of trial-and-error.

5 Stars Psi Ops, One of the greatest games EVER for Xbox
What do you get when you cross third person shooting with an array of Psychic powers. An absolutely awesome mind bending adventure with to many sharp twists to name.

Psi Ops is not your average third person shooter. It is the best third person shooter EVER and I feel sorry for any shooter fan who passes this up. It got an 8.0 out of 10 (OXM)and a 8.7 out of 10 (EGM). Some of the powers are a little much (cough Aura View cough) but is otherwise a great game. I love this game and HIGHLY recomend it to anyone who likes to shoot guns and throw people around. Also, don’t compare it to Second Sight, Another good game, because it is seriously different.

also an insane amount of unlockable content

4 Stars Mind powers! Cool!
I was given this game as a gift, and figured I’d give it a try. I’m not much of a gamer, but I was immediatly caught up the story of Scryer.

You start with an impressive cinematic movie explaining how Nick Scryer came to be caught in the situation he’s in. You also state with nothing but a paethic pistol but work up through the game through ‘training sessions’ that show up as flashbacks. You eventually ‘remember’ your psy abilities, and use them accordingly.

I thought the training sessions were easy to follow, and you can also skip through them if you choose. They also mimic the real game and its troubles accordingly.

Game controls are pretty instinctive, and you gain more use of the buttons as the game progresses. A few times I’d use my pyro (fire) skill instead of picking somone up to throw them, but the end result was still the same.

Where was I? Ah yes, the game has save places which was the only problem I had with this game. I hate save spots, which means you die, you have to go through that area ALL OVER AGAIN. Its annoying to say the least. However, once you ignore that little fact, the game is rather linear. You move from one level to the next, being aided by this fellow psy-ops who also explains your history and skills.

I really loved this game, and found the playability rather fun too. I give this a double thumbs up.

Just an added note: You can also find cheats on the Internet, but I have yet had to use any.

5 Stars An interesting game, that unfortunately…..
I think people overlooked. The story itself is quite simple, but it still keeps you interested nontheless.

The game, however, shines in the gameplay aspect. It uses the havock physics engine, so that means enemy bodies have a nice ragdoll effect, which makes it oh so satisfying to kill them using your psi powers. Telekinesis killing, by grabbing an enemy and constantly smashing him against stuff is quite fun.

One person wrote on a review about enemy spawning? In a way, he is correct. For the most part, the enemies are in place (which means that it is a smart thing to use Remote viewing to plan your tactics), however, there are some instances where enemies will spawn our of thin air; this usually happens when you trigger a “special” event. The most glaring case of this is early on in the game, where there are rooms that if you flip a switch, the door closes and gas gets pump into it. You see, nothing happens as long as you don’t go into the rooms- just use tk to get any items that are inside those rooms- if you do go inside, you’ll find that an enemy suddenly appears and flips the switch (trapping you in with the gas going into the room). Of course, this doesn’t really retract from the game.

The graphics are solid. Sure, some textures aren’t the best, but for the most part, the game is pretty dark that you won’t notice. The character models are pretty good, with enough detail in faces to provide convincing facial animations.

It’s a good game, especially for it’s price. I suggest you buy it.
